Anime in English usually refers to a style of animation originating in Japan, heavily influenced by the manga (Japanese comics) style and typically featuring characters with large eyes, big hair and elongated limbs, exaggerated facial expressions, brush-stroked outlines, limited motion and other distinctive features. The term may also be used for other animation connected to Japan or to anime proper, irrespective of style. The word comes from Japanese アニメ anime, meaning "animation" in general, and is typically pronounced /ˈænəˌmeɪ/ (help·info) or /ˈænəˌmə/ in English.

While the earliest known Japanese animation dates from 1917, and many original Japanese cartoons were produced in the ensuing decades, the characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s - notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka - and became known outside Japan in the 1980s.

Anime, like manga, has a large audience in Japan and high recognition throughout the world. Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online.

Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist. It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction. Anime gained early popularity in East and Southeast Asia and has garnered more-recent popularity in the Western World.

What manga do you want to have an anime adaptation?
Q. Also, what anime do you think that should be continued? Mine: 1. Psyren - ongoing series; should get an anime adaptation because the story is awesome which is all about Psycic abilities. 2. History's Strongest Disciple should definitely be continued for another season or two. The martial arts in this anime are very realistic, so you can consider this one of the top fighting/action anime. The rest of the story in the manga should be animated.

How can I start an Anime Club at school?
Q. Hi, I'm starting high school next year and me and my friends were talking about starting an Anime club. I don't really know how to start a club and I was wondering if someone could give me some tips or help or something.

A. First, you have to get people who are interested. Have them sign a paper stating that they will attend meetings. Then, you have to get a teacher to sponser it, and agree to stay after school and supervise the meetings, usually once or twice a month. At the meetings, it's best to keep things fun (cosplay, new episodes, character immitation, drawing, etc) See if your anime club can go on field trips and have fund raisers. :] Most teachers would be cool with it, but be sure to ask for guidelines and if they say no, ask why cheerleaders can cheer, and football players have a team. If they say no to your club, but yes to those, that's like... prejudice. Best of luck to you :] If you need anything else, just ask me. :]
