Problem solving is a mental process and is part of the larger problem process that includes problem finding and problem shaping. Considered the most complex of all intellectual functions, problem solving has been defined as higher-order cognitive process that requires the modulation and control of more routine or fundamental skills. Problem solving occurs when an organism or an artificial intelligence system needs to move from a given state to a desired goal state.

Over the years has the number of people who have good problem solving skills decreased?
Q. It seems to me many people dont know how to solve an issue in a more time efficient way and with less conflict. It seems everytime theres a problem it always has to escalate into a big arguement and takes too long to me to diffuse. What coulda ended in a simple apology or understanding always ends up being longer than it had to be. Are people lacking problem solving skills more so than people did back then?

A. In the modern society, humans live more by themselves and in smaller groups, many are single. This leads to a more egotistical lifestyle which combined with the consumerism that developed since the 1960s to a more introverted way of thinking. Terms of I want, I need, I am right, I don't want to listen to you because I do not have to, are more frequent than they used to be. To treat others with respect even if you disagree with them is not taught on TV on the Jerry Springer show et al. Abuse and confrontation is shown because it is entertaining and then accepted as the right way of solving problems.

Do religious people only use a very small percentage of the full potential of their problem solving brains?
Q. A problem solving brain, like the kind possessed by the human species, is a truly wonderful product of billions of years of random mutations and natural selection, huh. It can do wonderful things and each one has the potential to do very great, world changing things. But if all humans use their problem solving brain for is to believe a bunch of myths and superstitious nonsense like that which forms the core of every religion, it really is a waste, isn t it? Isn t it like arming soldiers with the latest weapons only to have them try to defend themselves with sticks and stones?

A. If you take a random sampling of people religious and atheist and measure there percentage of brain usage it would average out the same.
