From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An encyclopedia (also spelled encyclopaedia or encyclopædia) is a comprehensive written compendium that holds information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. Encyclopedias are divided into articles with one article on each subject covered. The articles on subjects in an encyclopedia are usually accessed alphabetically by article name and can be contained in one volume or many volumes, depending on the amount of material included. “ Indeed, the purpose of an encyclopedia is to collect knowledge disseminated around the globe; to set forth its general system to the men with whom we live, and transmit it to those who will come after us, so that the work of preceding centuries will not become useless to the centuries to come; and so that our offspring, becoming better instructed, will at the same time become more virtuous and happy, and that we should not die without having rendered a service to the human race in the future years to come. ” — DiderotOverviewFrom Wikipedia under the

I have the 14th edition from 1964, which i got for 5 dollars along with about 30 year book editions at a library sale, and I noticed the old Britannicas have, what looks like, a pineapple on the sides. Why a pineapple and what does it symbolize? Asked by peapatchisland - Fri May 23 18:07:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, it's a thistle, the floral emblem of scotland (the country the encyclopedia originated from). Answered by say 'no' to stop signs - Fri May 23 18:31:50 2008 should we look down on copy and paste answers from encyclopedia definitions of answers? Q. i understand the information gained from links to the encyclopedia, but shouldnt they just be only in the 'sources' box? since the people can just look it up as the questionaire can do the same. i think this site should be a place where you can get the opinion of people under their own thinking. you would be suprised of what people can observe without knowing. by questionnaire i mean the person asking the question. Asked by whtshdw - Sun Sep 9 09:54:07 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. No because some people dont know where to look, most people google it before asking, and if they dont then its because they dont have much time and want different answers to see what most people recommend, I don't think Yahoo! minds either because it makes their site more popular.
